The Gili islands are renowned for their white coral beaches and the diversity of sea life such as turtles, reef sharks, and myriad of small and large fish. Gili Islands are three small islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air) on the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. There are 3 main ways to reach Lombok from Bali by small aircrafts, fast boats or by the local public ferry.
By Airplane
From Denpasar Bali, Merpati Airlines serves 6 daily flights to Lombok with a 24 seat propeller driven planes which take approximately 30 minutes for the one-way trip. The first flight departs from Denpasar around 7.30 am, and the last flight is around 4.30 pm. From Mataram Airport, you should get a public transportation or bemos directly to Bangsal Harbor. Do not forget to bargain for the transportation price. From Bangsal Harbor to Gili Islands, the only transportation is by regular public boat or charter boats.
By Fastboat
Gili Cat fast boat is a small Australian made vessel that departs from Padang Bai Bali at 09:00 AM daily and takes only about two hours to Gili Trawangan. The boat departs from Gili Trawangan around 11:30 AM and heading back to Bali at around 12:15 PM. Gili Cat is capable of cruising at 30 knots securely and comfortably, with 16 passenger seats capacity.
By Public Ferry
The cheapest way to get to the Gilis is by using public ferry. The ferry departs from Padang Bai and crosses to Lembar harbor on Lombok and it could take 4 to 8 hours. From Lembar Harbor you can take a shuttle bus service to Bangsal harbor or take a public transportation (bemo) to Pemenang. From Pemenang you can ride ‘cidomo’ (horse cart) to Bangsal Harbor.
Public charter boat from Bangsal Harbor to Gili Trawangan, and two other Gilis are subjected Rp155.000 with maximum 10 passengers. And the tourist shuttle boat service from Bangsal harbor to Gili Trawangan, Meno and Air leaves at 16.30pm and the fare is Rp25.000 and so from the Gilis to Bangsal Harbor. Public boats leave all day from Bangsal to the 3 islands, boats will leave when they are full and the fare is Rp8,000. However if you buy all the remaining tickets, the boat will leave.
No small public boats have any kind of safety equipment and the waters around the Gili’s can get a bit bumpy. The only clinics are on Gili Trawangan that can deal with minor problems, located in the village and at Hotel Villa Ombak.
