The 7th Indonesian Biorock Workshop, 15th – 21st November 2010, Hotel Vila Ombak, Gili Trawangan, Lombok, Indonesia.
Global Coral Reef Alliance and the Gili Eco Trust are organizing the 7th Biorock Reef restoration training workshop in the Gili Island. This workshop is the third one held in Hotel Vila Ombak on Gili Trawangan island on 15th – 21st November 2010.
This amazing technology is used to regenerate damaged coral reefs, provide fish habitats and conserve Marine Biodiversity. Fish start to settle in the new Biorock Reef as soon as it is connected and a new marine ecosystem is rapidly created.
The Biorock technology is structure made of steel rebar are sunk at different depths and connected to a Direct Electric current. This very low voltage allows the process called “mineral accretion” to start the steel structure is grow solid limestone mineral and protect the steel from rusting. Broken corals are collected and attached onto the steel structure.
There are 42 Biorock Reefs around the Gili’s which are made to regenerate the coral reefs, providing fish and coral nurseries, keep up the marine biodiversity and protecting the beach from erosion and there are will be another 16 new Biorock Reefs to sink around Gili’s.
The participants are worldwide coral reefs student from Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Kuwait, State of Qatar, France, Caribbean, Colombia, UK and more will learn the complete process of doing Biorock Reef and how to maintain it from a real hands during the training combine with lectures by Dr. Thomas J. Goreau the President of Global Coral Reef Alliance. Some existing project managers such as Gili Eco Trust and Ms. Celia Gregory the Marine Foundation - UK, an artist working with the Biorock method will share their knowledge and experience. The student will learn every details of Biorock technology from steel rebar montage, welding, installation, corral collection and maintenance.
During the 7th Biorock Workshop its going to be a week of brain storming, build, sink, connect, attach corals and scuba diving for 100 peoples who are concerned about the environment protection and conservation the coral reef ecosystem.
